A drop is a dated release of product to market, used instead of one large seasonal delivery so a brand can put newness in front of buyers several times a year.

The traditional calendar has two main seasons and one large delivery each. A drop model splits the same range into smaller dated releases, so a retailer sees newness every few weeks and the brand is not betting an entire season on one buying appointment.
It came out of streetwear and spread because it suits how product is now discovered. A dated release gives something to announce, creates scarcity around a short selling window, and lets a brand react to what sold last time rather than forecasting twelve months out.
Drops multiply the work. Each one carries its own linesheet, its own delivery window, its own minimums, and its own list of partners who may or may not be offered it, and all of that has to be right while the previous drop is still shipping.
It also makes availability harder to hold. Several drops are live at once in different states, so a brand running the model needs availability and order status readable per drop rather than per style, or it will oversell the one everybody wanted.
