In-stock selling is selling from inventory a brand already holds, so an order can ship immediately rather than waiting on a production run.

Holding stock buys speed. A retailer who sells out mid-season reorders from whoever can ship this week, not from whoever can produce in twelve. In-stock ranges exist to catch that demand, which is why carryover basics and core colours are held while fashion pieces are not.
It is the opposite trade to pre-order. Pre-order moves the risk onto the buyer and the cash forward; in-stock keeps both with the brand, in exchange for being able to say yes immediately.
In-stock selling only works if availability is accurate. Selling against total stock rather than ATS is how styles get oversold, and an oversell on a reorder is more damaging than a late pre-order, because the buyer expected to be served now.
It also needs a reorder path that does not require an appointment. Most in-stock business is replenishment placed by the retailer directly, which is why brands running it seriously expose live availability rather than emailing a stock list round on Mondays.
