Machine-readable catalogue

A machine-readable catalogue is product data structured so a system can read, filter, and order from it without a person interpreting a document first.

Why a PDF is not one#

A PDF linesheet is readable by people and opaque to everything else. A price on it is a piece of text in a position, not a number attached to a variant, which is why every integration that begins with a PDF ends with somebody re-keying it.

A machine-readable catalogue holds the same information as fields: style, colourway, size, wholesale price, retail price, availability, delivery window, each attached to the thing it describes. That same data then serves the buyer portal, the rep, the ERP, and an assistant without being restated for each.

What makes one actually usable#

Structure alone is not enough, because the fields have to be populated and consistent. A catalogue where half the styles have no composition and colour is spelled three ways cannot be filtered by either, which was the point of structuring it.

The practical test is whether a question can be answered without opening anything: which styles under 60 wholesale are available in a full size run for a March delivery. If that needs a person and a spreadsheet, the catalogue is structured on paper only.
