Agentic ordering

Agentic ordering is an order prepared or placed by an AI assistant working directly against a live catalogue, rather than a person reading a linesheet and typing quantities.

What it replaces#

The ordering loop has barely changed in twenty years: a buyer receives a linesheet, decides quantities somewhere else, and sends them back for someone to key in. Agentic ordering collapses that by letting the buyer’s assistant read the range and build the order against live prices and availability.

The near-term version is less dramatic than it sounds. Most of it is drafting: an assistant proposing a reorder based on what sold, which a person then reviews and confirms. The order is still a commercial decision. What changes is who does the typing.

What has to be true first#

An agent can only order from a catalogue it can actually read, which means a machine-readable catalogue rather than a PDF. It also needs availability that is live rather than a stock list from Monday, or it will confidently commit units that were already promised.

The commercial rules have to be legible too. Order minimums, pack ratios, per-account price lists, and delivery windows are the constraints a human buyer carries in their head, and an agent that cannot see them produces orders someone has to correct by hand, which is slower than not using one.
