An AI agent is software that can read your wholesale data and take actions on it, rather than only answering questions about it.

In wholesale, agent already means a person: the sales agent who carries a collection on commission and writes orders in the brand’s name. An AI agent is unrelated, and the shared word causes real confusion now that both appear in the same conversation.
The distinction that matters is accountability. A sales agent holds a relationship and answers for the account. An AI agent holds credentials and answers to whoever scoped them, which is why what it is permitted to touch matters more than what it is capable of.
A chatbot answers from what it was given. An agent is connected to a live system: it can look up what is genuinely available, check what an account ordered last season, draft an order, and in some setups submit it. The difference is not intelligence, it is access.
That makes permissioning the whole design problem. An agent reading ATS to answer a buyer’s question is low risk. The same agent authorised to confirm orders against that availability is a different proposition, which is why most brands start with read access only.
