MCP (Model Context Protocol)

MCP is an open standard that lets an AI tool connect to a system such as an ordering platform and use its data through defined, permissioned operations.

The problem a protocol solves#

Before a shared standard, connecting an assistant to a business system meant building that integration once per assistant and once per system. None of the work transferred, so most systems were reachable by nothing and most assistants could see nothing beyond what had been pasted into them.

A protocol turns that into one integration each. The system exposes a set of operations — list orders, fetch a drop, look up a partner — and any compatible tool can use them. MCP is the current standard for this. The durable idea is the shape rather than the acronym, and the shape will outlast whichever name wins.

What it means in practice#

For a brand it means an assistant can answer questions against real data: what this account ordered last season, which styles in a drop are still available, which orders have been sitting unconfirmed. The answers come from the system rather than from a file somebody exported last week.

Scope is the part deserving attention. A connection is granted against an account and a set of operations, so the useful question at setup is not whether it works but what it can see and what it can change. Read-only access delivers most of the value and almost none of the risk.
