Lead time is the gap between placing an order and receiving the goods, covering production, finishing, freight, and customs rather than shipping alone.

Brands quote lead time from the factory and buyers experience it from the loading bay, and the gap between those two is where most disputes start. A realistic figure covers fabric availability, the production slot, finishing, consolidation, freight, and clearance.
It is also not constant. The same factory quotes differently in peak season, and a style needing a specific trim or a certified fabric is governed by that component rather than by the sewing time.
Lead time decides which model a brand can run. Short lead times support in-stock selling and replenishment; long ones force pre-order, because the brand has to know what to cut before it can start cutting.
What buyers actually need is not the shortest lead time but a reliable one. A brand that delivers in twelve weeks every time is easier to plan around than one promising eight and landing anywhere between six and sixteen.
